Patrick Mulreany, 1st Dan (Shodan)

At what club do you train?

Basildon

When did you start training?

2000

Why did you choose Ju Jitsu over other martial arts?

I tried others and found Ju Jitsu could be associated with every day life and occurences.

Did you do other sports/martial arts before Ju Jitsu?

Yes.

Tell us about your first Ju Jitsu class.

It was at William De Ferrers in South Woodham. The people were really helpful and made you feel welcome.

When did you think about getting your Black Belt?

I was told in February 2006 by my Sensei (Ian Arbon) that I was doing it in June 2006, I had no choice.

Was it difficult to attain?

It was probably one of the hardest things I have ever done, but one of the most rewarding.

What does a “black Belt” mean to you?

A new beginning.

Ever had to use Ju Jitsu for real?

No.

Do you enter martial arts competitions?

No, due to knee problems (old age really!)

Has Ju Jitsu changed your life in any positive or negative way?

It has changed in positive ways, none in a negative. (I still do what the wife tells me.)

What do you see as the advantages of Ju Jitsu?

Commitment, fitness, positive relationships, companionship, brings out confidence in others.

How much time does your training require?

Training time depends on the individual. I personally do 5 hours or more a week, during my Black Belt it could be as much as 10-12 hours. Your mind is always training.

If you could advise a beginner on one thing about Ju Jitsu what would it be?

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.
